The situation in Brazil is critical. Protests over an increase of 0.20 in bus fare (which are not only 20 cents, because this money, multiplied by the amount of people in Brazil who use 2-4 buses per day, make that a ludicrous amount) began in the city of São Paulo (the largest metropolis of the country) [you can see an amazing video about the rebellion here], advanced to the whole country. In my state, Rio de Janeiro, a protest happened in front of the most famous football stadium in the country, Maracanã (which is hosting the Confederations Cup and will host the World Cup / Olympics). Citizens sang the brazilian anthem and yelled “no violence”, and the police responded with rubber bullet shots and tear gas. (You can see video of it here). In Brazil, we had a dictatorship from 1937 to 1945, and even after that, everyone says we have a dictatorship hidden “beneath the hood”. Unlike the United States, which has only two, in Brazil we have, legalized by the Supreme Electoral Tribunal, 30 parties. One of these parties, PT (Partido Trabalhador, ie the Labour Party - for workers, for the lower social class of the country and all [the slogan of former president was “Brazil - A country for all”], has been in power 11 years. Okay, obviously, this is a democracy, but not everyone in Brazil have access to a decent education (the health and education systems of the country are deplorable.) 13 million people are illiterate in Brazil, and it is so easily manipulate information to the masses. A major television network in the country, Globo (like all the other tv stations [and newspapers], hasn’t shown anything about the protests in Rio. And in the ones in São Paulo, they portrayed the protesters as vandals and gave preference to the police (which peaceful protests). Chaos defines well what is happening in the country. President Dilma was literally booed in her speech during a soccer game of the Confederations Cup. Protestants are prohibited from bringing vinegar (which decreases the effect of tear gas). Journalists are being attacked (here and here) for just trying to show what is happening. CBN and Band News, radio stations who were narrating protests were taken off the air, just like a censorship in a dictatorship. Support protests are being made in France, Germany, Ireland and other countries. Tv, however, says nothing. Brazilian people are changing everything.
You’ll see, a child of yours, doesn’t run from a fight
Neither fears, whom loves you, its own death
Adored land, above others, it’s you, Brazil, oh beloved land
You are the gentle mother of the child of your soil, beloved land Brazil
- Brazilian anthem#changebrazil (a video explaining in english what pretty much is happening)
